nullity!

O problema do nada!

A vossa e todas outras.

A maths teacher, Dr. James Anderson, solved a 1200 years old problem. The problem of nothing! Problem that neither Newton nor Pythagoras could solve.

But let's take this slowly.

I'm forced to start by the name of this teacher. Dr. James Anderson. Not so long ago I was picking names to my son. We decided to call him Gabriel, but it could have been Dr. Gabriel or even Eng. Gabriel. Ok, so after this little joke, what I mean is that the Nordics are way better than us on this subject. There's no Dr. Something, or Eng. Something, or even Arc. Something. Everyone is called by his own first name, like it should be everywhere. Last names are for distinguish between repeated names. I think we (the rest of the world) tend to mistake who a person is by what's the "title" of that person. And then we get to the point of:
- When you finish with that form, please deliver it to mister architect.
- ????

Moving on.

Back to the maths, the problem of nothing is basically the non-definition of the result of a division by zero. If you try to divide by zero on your calculator you'll get an error. If the auto-pilot of the airplane you're flying in divides by zero, you're in big trouble. If you use a pacemaker and it divides by zero, you're gone!

So, it's a serious problem.

And what this Mister Dr. Arc. Eng. Professor did was the following. He came up with a new number (not from the same line as the other numbers) and said that if you divide by zero, you'll get that number. To this number he called nullity.

Amazing wouldn't you say? So simple and in 1200 years no one could find it out. I think, once he was with his hand on it, why didn't he solved the world starving problem, or even the world poverty problem? He just needed to invent a bread that doesn't exit and give to everyone that's hungry. Or, invent money that doesn't exit and give to poor people. Pity that he didn't thought about that..

But thinking again, I realize that if this Mister Teacher (etc etc) wouldn't hurry up with this new theory, that Mister Reporter (etc etc) from Record, mentioned a few days ago, would get the credits for this discovery. Like he wasn't a mathematic mastermind, calculating up to a speed of 222 Km/h!
