saudades

When I played the final Smasking Pumpkins show on the night of December 2 2000, I walked off the Metro stage believing that I was forever leaving a piece of my life behind.
(...)
For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams.

Billy Corgan

How great is to know that an amazing band is back. Mainly when it's my favorite band. I'm really looking forward to this return. To know what is new and what has changed..

I also share some of the feelings of Mr. Billy. When I walked off the stage on the August 15 2003, I didn't know that show would be the last one. And I am not so lucky to be walking around with a similar secret. But I'd like to. I'd like to repeat all those amazing times!! Will there be a day that this becomes true? Don't know, but in meanwhile, I let you listen with one of my favourite songs, recorded on X-mas 2001. Sorry about the recording quality, isn't the best, you'll need a braveheart :)

cassie & moses

Tudo isto e muito mais, no Animal Planet – it grabs you!

Warmed up by a discussion in the new "Temas Quentas" blog, I want to leave here this little story:

Cassie, a half-year old cat was abandoned in a residential block, finds Moses, a wild crow. Cats and birds are not known as the best friends. In this in case, it was exactly the opposite. Moses helped Cassie to stay way from the roads and dangers, preventing the worst. He also helped him to find food. Now they spend the days together and they play as if there would not be a tomorrow. This fantastic story was seen and recorded by an elder couple during days and days.
All this and much more, in Animal Planet- it grabs you!

So, if two so different animals can help themselves and live together without problems, why can't we, as rational animals, be able to share the planet with the remaining animals?

a gente vai continuar

E enquanto alguns fazem figura
Outros sucumbem à batota
Chega aonde tu quiseres
Mas goza bem a tua rota

Enquanto houver estrada para andar
A gente vai continuar
Enquanto houver estrada para andar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar
A gente não vai parar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar

Reduz as necessidades se queres passar bem
Que a dependência é uma besta
Que dá cabo do desejo
E a liberdade é uma maluca
Que sabe quanto vale um beijo

Enquanto houver estrada para andar
A gente vai continuar
Enquanto houver estrada para andar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar
A gente não vai parar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar

Enquanto houver estrada para andar
A gente vai continuar
Enquanto houver estrada para andar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar
A gente não vai parar
Enquanto houver ventos e mar

sLevin

Fui ver Lucky Number Slevin.

I went to see Lucky Number Slevin.
Very good. I adore movies that get the puzzle all together at the end. If you liked Pulp Fiction, or The Usual Suspects, you'll like this one.
Slevin is a unlucky guy who gets in the way of a debts war that he does not have, caught in a exchange of identities. The way that from there the action expands, together with a good director job, a touch of wise sentences and 5 actors of great quality, make this a delicious movie. Go and see it! Oh, and by the way, don't try to be smart and guess what's going to happen next. Let the movie reveals itself.

The Boss: [Showing a picture] This was my son. Notice how I said was? That's because he's dead. Relegated to the past tense. Went from an is to a was before he had his breakfast.
Slevin: Bummer.

O próximo seria “my hairy _unt” (my hairy aunt) mas é melhor não..
And here is the solution of the puzzle from 2 days ago. All the answers were near... There were perhaps who did not answer for having seen the puzzle as a bad word.. but it is not! The next one would be “my hairy _unt” (my hairy aunt), but is better not.

1986

Got this by email:

In accordance with the regulators and bureaucrats of today, all we who borned in the 60's, 70's and beginning of 80's should not have survived until today. This because: Ours cradles were painted with pretty colors in ink with lead base that we many times licked and bit. We did not have medicine bottles with protection covers or latchs in the closets and we could play with pans. When we bicked, we did not use helmets. When we were small, we travelled in cars without belts and airbags - and travelling in the front seat was a bonus. We drank water of the hose of the garden and not of the bottle and it tasted well. We ate fry potatoes, bread with butter and we drank soda with sugar, but we never got fat because we were always playing outside. We shared bottles and cups with friends and we never die of that. We spent hours making cars that we would take down the hill at great speed, for later rememberer that we forgot to mount brakes. After finishing in one wall we learned. We used to leave the house in the morning and play all the day, once we would be back in house before dark. We were unreacheable and nobody cared. We did not have PlayStation or XBox. No 40 television channels, video games, home cinema, cell phones, computers, DVD, chat in the Internet. We had friends and if we wanted to find them we would go outside. We fell of trees, cut ourselfs, and broke bones without processes in the court of law. We knocked on the neighbors' doors and ran away fearing to be caught. We walked to the house of our friends. We even walked to school. We created games with woods and balls.

This generation produced the best disentangled inventors ever. The last 50 years have been a new explosion of innovation and ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility and learn to deal with everything.

This is the normal way of evolution.
We are, each time more, in a world where we sacrifice privacy on behalf of security.
If you think that the pasts 20 years had an enormous transformation, then wait 10 more and you'll see where it will be.

But, is this bad?
Without a doubt that I liked I spent my infancy. Now, if we arrange a meeting and if somebody is 1 minute late, we call him to see where he is. To get the reply: “I am a little delayed, I'll be there in a while”. Clearly, this we already knew before calling. Before, in the same situation, we would just wait, not making a big problem of it.
Does this mean that evolution turns our life more “stressed”? More secure, without a doubt, but less “responsible” and “creative”?

the insolent bird

I was chatting with Iceland, in that classic daily update, “the weather has been good, too good for what is normal for this time of the year, and it is also getting to that time when is almost bright all day long...” and suddently, out of the blue, “Oh, it just started to snow!”.
“But, we are in MAY” I said incredulous.
“I know...“.
That country.. really..
A bit after was time for the wild bird story.
Icelandic people pass the whole year with open windows, being winter or summer (i mean, spring, summer never is). And so it seems that a bird entered through a window, flew around the house, and until they could return "him" back to the nature, the “small one” left a few "cosby kids" behind. More exactly, in the bathtub.
In my way of seeing it, there was not reason to call Sherlock Holmes to investigate such mystery.
It is clear that the bird would have ingested some less advisable substance for his small stomach. Perhaps even after the expired date. The result is obviously an overturn and the consequent necessity to go to “little house”. Or the “field”, more appropriate for this case. He was then flying over that zone when he found the open window and thought: “I'm so in a hurry that certainly I do not arrive in time at home. If I do not take this chance here, it will be very ugly to wash this crap from my feathers.”. So he takes the chance and enters the house without asking for license. The rush is huge. Everyone knows that this physiological activity does not give time to think properly and is faster than the light. Not knowing the house, he gives a fast round for recognition already with his back legs twisted in a way to suster the already high pressure in that zone. Discovering the bathroom, already with a flashing red light, he faces a new disaster: the toillet cover is down. Of course, he does not have the strentgh for everything. The moment is of crisis. What to do now? The bathtub seemed to be the best option, therefore, he released the pain in low flight.
Their version was somewhat different. They affirm that the occurred event was due to intense persecution to the bird. And so, once frightened, the rest is natural.

nuclear

Nuclear could be short for nuke le air.
Nuclear is also the joker of Mr. Patrick Monteiro de Barros, a businessman former-shareholder of the Galp, to make our country self-sufficient in energy.
It is good to know that there are people willing to look after the future of our country.
But, must the solution be so extreme?
According to the same man, the country needs 3 nuclear power plants and points to the Douro region as the preferred place to install them.
I was told yesterday that he was recently in the Mogadouro's Mayor house to sell his idea. It seems that Mogadouro looks like Chernobyl.
There are diverse nuclear power plants in activity nowadays, for example, 80% of the french energy is of nuclear origin. And truth must be said that we have not heard of any problem.
But if something goes wrong... the result is not pretty.
As it was on the 26 of April of 1986, when the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl power plant blew up due to a overheating during a security test. How ironic...
Also ironic is that this event is just another Titanic.
They were so sure of the nuclear power plant safety that did not bother to construct a protection cover, as it was designed. If they had, damage would not have been so high.
Of course that nuclear power plants do not blow up as chestnuts in the fire in a S. Martinho's day, or as rockets in a new year's evening, but how confident will we be living next to a bomb that in case of some combination of bizarre factors are met, can result in a huge disaster?
As a comparison, the disaster of Chernobyl spread 300 times more radioactivity than the Hiroshima bomb...
Can you imagine when you are lying at the sun in the swimming pool, and instead of having Figueira's mountain in your sight, you have a similar view to the image below..
What are you going to do to stop it?
Is it time to draw posters with Nuclear? No thanks! and take it to the streets?

And since we are willing to defend our best interests, why don't we do a little more for who can't have a choice. Go here.

:)

Ahhh... férias, here I go.
Quer dizer, quase.
Com tanta cadeira fácil, fui-me meter numa interessante e difícil. Nunca aprendo.

one small step for nando..

..one giant jump for man kind.

Although I said this before, like 2 years ago, now I say it again more convincingly.
And this was my last day of classes of my last semester ever! :)

Ahhh… holidays, here I go.
Well, almost.
Still have to do 2 exams, do and hand in 1 project, one 3-week course, to then only be missing the 6-month thesis.
So near.
So so near that I can already see the light at the end.
Or that, or it is an effect to having spent the last days working in an endless and unsolvable ECC project. Who does not know what this is, can imagine to be one month with the head underneath a pneumatic hammer… something of this type.
There are times I tend to choose the most difficult paths. So many easy courses out there to choose, and I had to throw myself in an interesting and difficult one.
I never learn. Never never..

Moving on, since "passed waters do not pull wagons".. hmm. does this make any sense?
Anyway, today it was a beauty of a sunnt day here. Vera's cousin (also known as spring) has finally decided to show up. Was about time.

Coming back to the starting point.
Enough of courses/classes.
I have spent 19 years in classes...
Gosh. that sounds so bad that hurts.

Começando com “pyramid song”, passando por temas que vão estar no novo álbum a sair brevemente, e a passar por alguns clássicos, como “street spirit (fade out)”, “everything in the right place”, “paranoid android”, “the bends”, “black star”, “lucky”, “idioteque”, "there there" e ainda uma inesperada “karmapolice”, entre muitas outras.
Mesmo assim, eles tiveram there.
Eles tiveram mesmo there there.

It has been some time since I've been in a concert.
I confess that I was already missing it.
How fantastic is to attend to a small group of people who creates sounds that make us feel great.
Yesterday I took off my belly of the misery.
And it was not with any band, but yes with THE band! Probably the, or one of the, best bands of the nowadays.
Starting with “pyramid song”, passing by new songs of the new album to be released soon, and passing by some of the classics, as “street spirit (fade out)”, “everything in the right place”, “paranoid android”, “the bends”, “black to star”, “lucky”, “idioteque”, "there there" and still an unexpected “karmapolice”, between many others.
Unhappyly we did not have right to anything from the “Pablo Honey”, even though somebody behind me cried out aloud “anyone can play to guitar” each 2 songs.
They played 2 hours with 3 encores!
Simply amazing.
My third time and still without listening to "creep"! How dare they..
Even though they were there.
They were exactly there there.

(theres someone on your shoulder)
just 'cause you feel it doesn't mean its there.

tdc

TDC é a TVCabo cá do sítio.
Ora ora ora...
Ligo a TV e confirmo a desgraça.
Reduzido a 8 canais!!!

Então deparo-me agora com 3 possibilidades:

Hmm...
...alguém tem um alicate à mão?

TDC is the company that provides cable TV here.
One week ago they left me a blue paper in the post box.
"We inform you that from this moment on you have access to the basic package supplied by TDC".
well well well...
I turn on the TV and I confirm the disaster.
Reduced to 8 channels!
National channels (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian), full of bla bla bla that can't be understanded, news that nobody perceives and series that do not interest nor even to little jesus.
In the search for the reason, I took the blue paper and I walked to the office of the "Inspector" with a "what tha'f**k is this dude?" in the tip of the tongue.
According to the inspector, or the previous inhabitants had a contract with TDC that possibly have expired now and the situation was rectified to the basic package--the supplied one by the college; or the previous inhabitants had removed (illegally) the filter that blocks the remaining channels, thirsty to enter in our television. He concluded saying that the last possibility was of certain normal practical form...
Naaaa... Vandalism?
I was shocked.
I must say that I even considered to pass by a pharmacy to buy "aid" to sleep during the night.
However, while returning home, I read the names affixed on the mailboxes of each one of the apartments... and few were names of "locals". Later I found the box that distributes the cables and with surprise, or not, it was open. Did Mr. TDC left the box opened for incautiousness, just a few days after having been here to place filters? Hmm, I realize that I was not only "unhappy" with this situation.

Ahhhh.. what a relief and now I know I won't have problems to sleep.

So here I stand facing 3 possibilities:
1. get used to zap the 8 channels (now separated by full hands of codified channels) and may be that by the third "lap" I'll get an extra channel.
2. the "national" method: call TDC to politely thank for the blue paper and to spend a certain amount of money for making one Mr. TDC come all the way here to remove the (f*****g) filter.
3. Save the work to the TDC guy and make justice to the fame of being of a south country.

Hmm...
... by the way, does somebody have a plier to lend me?
