bilião
 Tenho de expressar publicamente o meu pedido de desculpas sobre o tema "bilião". Isto vem a propósito de que há uns dias, durante um jantar, a única outra pessoa portuguesa que estava além de mim disse que o bilião português não era igual ao americano. Para quem não está bem lembrado, os américas dizem que um bilião são mil milhões. Aquela regra normal, temos mil, multiplicamos por mil e temos um milhão e multiplicamos por mil e temos um bilião. Lógico. Na altura, levado pela estupidez de haver 2 tipos de biliões, que no fim de tudo é um número matemático, a ciência mais precisa que há, defendi que deveria haver um qualquer tipo de confusão. Depois veio a discussão que realmente em algumas línguas europeias, tipo dinamarquês, a palavra milliard define esse número a que os américas chamam de bilião. Tendo depois billion para mil milliards ou mil biliões americanos. Mas como é a palavra em português... era o que nós queríamos saber! Eu dizia: "É bilião! Tem de ser!" Ela dizia: "Acho que não há palavra... nós dizemos mil milhões!" Eu: "nada disso.. então agora não há um nome para mil milhões?" Mas afinal pode. E tanto pode que não há mesmo. Matematicamente falando, o bilião americano corresponde a 10^9, enquanto que o nosso corresponde a 10^12. Ou seja, mil vezes maior. E eu sempre pensei que grandezas fosse sempre uma coisa americana. Embora se diga à grande e à francesa, ainda não sei bem porquê... mas no fim de contas, nós é que somos os grandes... tão grandes que mil milhões é tão insignificante que nem um nome merece! This came up in one of these days, during a dinner, the only other Portuguese person who was there besides me said that the Portuguese billion was not equal to the American. For whom is not remembered, Americans say that a billion are a thousand millions. By the rule that, we have a thousand, we multiply it for another thousand and we have a million and we then multiply it for another thousand and we have a billion, and so on and so forth. It's logical. Then we discussed that in some European languages, Danish for example, the word milliard defines this number, the one that Americans call billion. And billion for a thousand milliards or American billions. But what was the word in Portuguese… that's what we wanted to know! I said: “It is billion! It has to be” She said: “I think there's no word… we just say a thousand millions” I: “no way. so we wouldn't have a name for a thousand millions?” But after all, it is true. There is no word for that indeed. Mathematically speaking, the American billion corresponds to 10^9, whereas our billion corresponds to 10^12. That is, a thousand times bigger. And I always thought that BIG was always an American thing. Although the saying says as great as french, which I dont yet know well reason for that… but in the end, it's us that are great… so great that a thousand millions are so insignificant that not even a name deserves to be called!
